Dan King over at Management by God tagged me for a meme about odd jobs :) Well at the risk of humiliation...here it goes lol....oh here are the instructions:
1. Write a post about some strange job you’ve had and what you learned from it.
2. Link to this and other “Lessons from Odd Jobs” posts around the highcallingblogs.com network, or quote them in your post with proper attribution.
3. Tag your post “lessons from odd jobs”—if you use technorati tags or another form of meta-tags.
4. Tag other bloggers by linking to them in your post and inviting them to participate in the meme. Tag as many people as you like! So I am tagging...

When I was about 19 years old I worked casually for a 'beverage company' and sold said beverages from a tub full of ice in nightclubs and lounges wearing less than modest attire. I guess I can redeem myself somewhat in that I later moved on up the classy ladder and began handing out samples of wine at high end liquor stores in an attempt to sell a bottle of bubbly to accompany that nice dinner meal.
Sheesh the stuff I did before I got myself acquainted with Jesus *smile*.
Now what did I learn from this job??? Hmmmm, probably that there is WAY too much emphasis in society placed on outward appearance and that objectifying oneself on purpose is harmful to your spirit and soul and leaves you with a gnawing, crushing, empty ache that takes your breath away. The good news for me is that space could only be filled by God and I actually got that through my extremely hard head - eventually.
I liked what Dan said he learned from his odd job experience:
"Overcome your pride - As a talented young man looking for a job that would allow me to use my Go-given skills, I had to suck it up and take a job pushing yo-yos and kites in order to get by. It was a pretty humbling experience, and I had to learn that humility the hard way."
All I can say to that is AMEN, Dan.
I think writing this very post was a lesson in humility for me all on its own. Hey, I'm not where I need to be but THANK GOD I am not where I used to be!

Oh, I've got a number of "interesting" jobs I could share about. Hmmm, let me see. I'll try to get to this soon.
Love it. Isn't good that God saves us from ourselves and puts us to work in His service
Hi Marlo, thanks for sharing about your job. I had a job similar for awhile, so I know what you're talking about. (I actually sold the "beverages" in a skimpy skirt, on a tray in bars. Yes, I was a cocktail waitress.) :) The skimpier the dress the bigger the tips. How sad is that? :) Come see my post about my odd job, if you have a couple minutes. It's titled An Odd Lesson (it's the second one from the top. Dan tagged me as well.) Blessings to you!

What is so good about being saved from ourselves and put to work in His service? What does that mean?
Wow--it's so refreshing to see someone who can be honest about stuff like this--and find the lesson in it. Our focus on outward appearances does leave us with a "gnawing, crushing, empty ache."
